Life Story

A Steadfast Spirit of Family, Faith, and Work

Early Life

Donnie Windham was born in 1941 in Newton County, Mississippi, into a generation defined by resilience, faith, and perseverance. Raised in a rural community where family and hard work were the cornerstones of daily life, Donnie’s upbringing reflected the enduring traditions of small-town Mississippi—where neighbors supported one another and faith guided every step.

Marriage and Family

In his early adulthood, Donnie married Martha Jane Walker (1946–2015), a union that joined two families deeply rooted in the Altare community. Together, they built a loving home grounded in Christian faith and mutual respect. Their marriage represented the continuation of two strong family lineages—the Windhams and the Walkers—whose histories were intertwined with the land and the church that shaped generations before them.

Donnie and Martha Jane’s partnership was one of devotion and shared purpose, as they worked side by side to provide stability, love, and encouragement to those around them.

Work and Character

Throughout his life, Donnie was known for his strong work ethic and unwavering dependability. Whether laboring on local farms or assisting neighbors in times of need, he embodied the quiet dignity of a man who believed in doing what was right, no matter how humble the task.

Those who knew him recall his steady presence, his practical wisdom, and the warmth he extended to friends and family alike. He was a man of few words but deep conviction—a reflection of the generation that helped sustain the moral and social fabric of Newton County through times of great change.

Faith and Legacy

Faith was central to Donnie’s life. He maintained a lifelong connection to the Altare Missionary Baptist Church, a spiritual home for both the Windham and Walker families. His quiet strength and humility reflected the principles taught there—service, community, and the belief that love and faith can overcome all challenges.

Donnie passed away on September 27, 2022, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, steadfastness, and deep family devotion. He was laid to rest at the Altare Missionary Baptist Church graveyard, beside his beloved wife, Martha Jane Walker Windham, reaffirming their enduring bond both in life and eternity.
