A Life Rooted in Faith and Family
Early Life
Martha Jane Walker Windham was born on March 2, 1946, in Newton County, Mississippi, to Mary Eliza Walker (1913–1999), a devoted mother who raised her family in the close-knit and faith-centered community of Altare. Growing up amid the deep traditions of the Walker and Evans families, Martha Jane learned early the values of hard work, compassion, and spiritual devotion that had guided generations before her.
Marriage and Family
In adulthood, Martha Jane married Donnie Windham (1941–2022), beginning a lifelong partnership defined by love, perseverance, and mutual respect. Together they built a life centered on family and faith, remaining deeply connected to their Mississippi roots even as their lives reflected the changing times of the mid-20th century South.
Faith and Community
Martha Jane remained closely tied to the Altare Missionary Baptist Church, where her family had worshiped for over a century. Her life mirrored the enduring legacy of Altare—faith through adversity, and strength through community. Whether through acts of kindness, quiet devotion, or her steadfast support of family, she embodied the spirit of Christian service and community upliftment that defined the church’s history.
Passing and Legacy
On January 26, 2015, Martha Jane passed away at the age of 68, leaving behind a loving family and a legacy of faith and dedication. Funeral services reflected the deep affection of family and friends who gathered to celebrate her life and faith.
She was laid to rest in the Altare Missionary Baptist Church graveyard, among the generations of Walkers, Evanses, and Wares whose stories continue to shape the narrative of Newton County’s rich heritage.
