Life Story
Birth & Family
Edward Lee Moore was born on May 5, 1941, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to Smith “Jig” Moore (1901–1989) and Eva Haney Moore (1909–1985). He lived his entire life in Newton County, Mississippi.
Edward never married and did not have children, but he remained deeply connected to his family as a son, brother, uncle, and cousin.
Childhood & Independence
From a young age, Edward was known for his strong-willed and independent nature. He was not particularly fond of school and developed creative ways to avoid attending, sometimes riding the bus to school but spending the day elsewhere before returning home as if he had gone.
During the summers of the 1950s, many of the Moore children traveled to Moultrie, Georgia, to work in the fields picking cotton, pecans, and pears. Edward’s older sister Dorethea and her husband Jack Moore would come each year to transport the children in an old pickup truck with a camper on the back. Edward often resisted going. When it was time to leave, he would slip away into the bushes to avoid the trip, and his father, Smith, would chase after him—though Edward was usually too quick to catch.
When field work became available in Decatur, Mississippi, and transportation was arranged for the children, Edward was known to intentionally delay those early morning departures by disassembling parts from the truck. His actions showcased his determination to forge his own path.
Later Life & Character
Edward did not attend church and preferred a quiet, independent life. He enjoyed riding in his car and was known for helping people who did not have transportation, driving them wherever they needed to go.
Though some may have considered him unusual, those closest to him understood him as a kind and gentle soul. He cherished his friendship with Chrissy Bell Arrington. Whenever she called, he responded by shouting, but no matter what she needed, he made it happen. His loyalty and devotion to those he cared about defined much of his life.
Death & Burial
Edward Lee Moore passed away on January 30, 2023. He was laid to rest at White Stone–Morrow Cemetery in Newton County, Mississippi.
Legacy
Very little was formally written about Edward’s life, but his story matters. He was valued and loved by his family. He is remembered for his individuality, humor, independence, and quiet acts of kindness. His life remains an important part of the Moore family’s shared history and deserves recognition.
