Life Story
A Life of Faith, Family, and Devotion
Early Life and Family
Estella McNair was born on January 11, 1932, in Newton County, Mississippi, to John McNair and Candis Beddingfield McNair. She was the youngest of seven children in a large rural family rooted in the Lawrence and Newton communities.
The 1940 United States Census records eight-year-old Estella living with her parents and siblings along the Ebenezer–Decatur Road near Lawrence in Newton County. The McNair household included her father John (age 50), mother, Candis (49), and siblings Selesta, Christina, and Lorena. Like many rural Black families of the time, the household also included extended family members and children connected to the family.
Estella attended school during her childhood and had completed the first grade by 1940, typical for young children living in farming communities where education was often balanced with family responsibilities.
By 1950, Estella was eighteen years old and still living with her parents in Newton. The census lists her occupation as a farm helper, working approximately 50 hours per week, reflecting the hard agricultural labor that sustained many families in the region.
Marriage and Family Life
Estella later married James Allen Banks, and from this union eight children were born. Together they built their home and raised their family in Smith County, Mississippi, where Estella spent the majority of her adult life.
She was known for her devotion to family and her strong Christian faith. At an early age she joined Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in Newton County. Later in life she became an honorary member of Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Smith County, where she remained faithful in service until her health began to decline.
Estella was remembered by her family as a joyful, strong, and devoted woman whose love for her children, grandchildren, and extended family was evident throughout her life.
Work and Community Life
Estella spent many years working outside the home as well. She was employed at the Raleigh Corporation in Raleigh, Mississippi, where she worked as a utility worker until her retirement.
After retiring from Raleigh Corporation, she continued to stay active by working part-time at the A&B Core facility in Raleigh until the company eventually closed.
Throughout these years she remained deeply connected to her community and family, serving as an encouraging mother, grandmother, and respected elder.
Later Years
Public records show Estella living for many decades in Forest, Mississippi, particularly along SCR 541, where she resided from the early 1970s through the later years of her life. Her home became a gathering place for children, grandchildren, and extended family.
She lived to see several generations of her family grow and flourish.
