Life Story
Early Life and Family Roots
Jerlean Curry McDonald was born on November 3, 1930, in the Lawrence community of Newton County, Mississippi, to Carlton Curry and Sarah Williams Curry. She was one of the younger children in a large family whose roots run deep in the red clay soil of rural Mississippi.
Jerlean entered the world during the opening years of the Great Depression. Her childhood was spent in a household shaped by both perseverance and faith. Before her birth, her parents had already endured the loss of several children, including two stillborn infants and a young son, Eugene Carlton Curry, who died at the age of two. These experiences strengthened the close bonds that united the Curry family.
The 1940 census finds nine-year-old Jerlean living with her parents and siblings in Beat 4 of Newton County. Among those in the household were her brothers Arthur and Nathaniel and her sisters Mildred, Inez, Imagene, and Ernestine. Like many children growing up in rural Mississippi, Jerlean attended the local schools while contributing to the daily responsibilities of family life.
Growing Up in Lawrence
Jerlean’s childhood was firmly rooted in the Lawrence community, where family ties, church connections, and neighborhood relationships formed the foundation of daily life. The Curry family had lived in the same area for many years, and the community’s traditions helped shape her values of hard work, family loyalty, and perseverance.
Although educational opportunities for African Americans in rural Mississippi were limited during the Jim Crow era, Jerlean attended school and gained the skills necessary to navigate adulthood during a period of significant social and economic change.
Marriage and Family Life
As a young woman, Jerlean married L. B. McDonald, and together they established their life in Newton County.
The 1950 census records nineteen-year-old Jerlean, listed as “Gerlean Macdonald,” living with her husband’s family on a farm in Newton. The household was a multigenerational one headed by her father-in-law, John McDonald, and mother-in-law, Estella Nelson McDonald. Also residing in the home was L. B.’s grandfather, Alec McDonald, then eighty-one years old.
Like many women of her generation, Jerlean devoted herself to managing the household and caring for family members. Her work as a homemaker was central to the stability and success of the family.
Together, Jerlean and L. B. raised four children:

A Life Anchored in Community
Unlike many members of her generation who left Mississippi during the Great Migration, Jerlean remained closely connected to the community where she was born and raised.
Her life was centered in and around Lawrence and Newton County, where she maintained close relationships with family members and neighbors. The values she learned as a child continued to guide her as a wife, mother, and community member.
In April 1965, she formally updated her Social Security records under the name Jerlean Curry McDonald, documenting the name by which she was known throughout her adult life.
Death and Legacy
Jerlean Curry McDonald passed away on July 3, 1989, at the age of fifty-eight.
She was laid to rest at Union Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery in Lawrence, Newton County, Mississippi, returning to the same community that had shaped every stage of her life.
Though her life was lived largely outside the public spotlight, Jerlean’s legacy endures through her children, grandchildren, extended family, and the community she called home. Her story reflects the quiet strength of countless women whose dedication to family, faith, and home helped sustain generations in rural Mississippi.
Today, she is remembered as a devoted daughter of Carlton and Sarah Curry, a loving wife and mother, and a faithful steward of the family traditions passed down through the Curry and McDonald families.
