Life Story
Early Life in Lawrence
LaToya Evans was born on March 12, 1982, in Newton County, Mississippi, to Willie Lee “Bill” Evans and Flora Mae Dukes Evans.
She was raised in the Lawrence community, where she grew up surrounded by parents, siblings, extended family members, and friends. LaToya’s childhood was rooted in a close-knit family environment that reflected the strong community ties long associated with Newton County.
As the youngest child in the household, she was cherished by her family and enjoyed the companionship of her older brother, James Dukes, and her older sister, Victoria Crosby.
School Years
LaToya attended Newton Elementary School, where she developed a reputation as a hardworking student.
Her academic efforts were recognized during the 1989–1990 school year when she earned placement on the Second Grade Honor Roll. Her achievement was published in The Newton Record and reflected her dedication to her studies at an early age.
For her family, the recognition was a source of pride and demonstrated the promise of a bright future ahead.
Family Life
LaToya grew up in a multigenerational family that valued togetherness and mutual support.
Her home on Greenie-Morrow Road was often filled with relatives and visitors. In addition to her parents and siblings, she shared close relationships with extended family members, including her niece, Tammy Crosby.
The Evans household was known as a place where family connections remained strong and where multiple generations frequently gathered together.
The House Fire of 1996
During the early morning hours of February 3, 1996, tragedy struck the Evans family home on Greenie-Morrow Road.
A rapidly spreading fire engulfed the residence while family members slept. Emergency responders faced difficult conditions due to icy roads and the speed with which the fire spread through the home.
Investigators later suggested that a candle may have been the source of the blaze.
The fire claimed seven lives:

- Tammy Crosby
- Jessie Johnson
According to Newton County officials, the victims succumbed primarily to smoke inhalation before rescue efforts could reach them.
LaToya was only thirteen years old.
Death and Burial
LaToya Evans passed away on February 3, 1996.
Following funeral services, she was laid to rest at Union Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery in Lawrence, Newton County, Mississippi, alongside members of her family.
Legacy
Although her life lasted only thirteen years, LaToya is remembered as a bright young student, a beloved daughter and sister, and a cherished member of the Lawrence community.
Her honor roll achievement offers a glimpse of the promise she carried and the future that lay before her. While her life was tragically cut short, her memory continues to live on through the family who loved her and the community that still remembers the devastating loss suffered on Greenie-Morrow Road in 1996.
