Life Story
Birth and Family Background
Matilda Evans was born about October 28, 1880, in Newton County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Gus Evans (1847–1926) and Melissa Ann Evans (1851–?). Her early childhood unfolded within the close-knit Evans community, and records show that by the age of five she was already enrolled in the Newton School Election District—an early indication of the family’s commitment to education during a time when opportunities for African American children were limited.
Marriage and Work
Matilda married Plummer Scanlan (1877–1943) on December 10, 1901. Together, they built a life centered around farming, with Matilda working as a farm laborer on their home farm. Their household was rooted in hard work, family, and the rhythms of rural life in Newton County.
Children
Matilda and Plummer welcomed a large and loving family. Their known children were:
- Myrtice Scanlan (1898–?)
- Olivia Scanlan (1904–1995)
- Victor Scanlan (1905–1976)
- Spurgeon Scanlan (1912–1987)
- Rosie Scanlan (1915–2010)
- Blanche Scanlan (1919–2006)
These children went on to carry forward the Scanlan and Evans legacy across generations.
Death and Legacy
Matilda passed away on October 26, 1935, and she is laid to rest at the Evans Cemetery. Her headstone bears a tender tribute that reflects how she was remembered by those who loved her:
“She was the sunshine of our home.”
This simple but heartfelt inscription captures the warmth, devotion, and quiet strength she offered her family and community during her lifetime.
