Life Story

Early Life and Family

Nora Lee Belt was born on April 29, 1919, in Newton County, Mississippi, to Robert Belt (1885–1963) and Virginia Berry Belt (1885–1975). She was raised in Beat 4 in a large and active household that included siblings Julia, Bettie Mae, Lillie, Willie M., Robert Jr., Annie, Larcenia, Bessie, and Joe Wesley.

The 1920 Census records her as an infant living with her parents, and by 1930 she was an 11-year-old student who could read and write. She completed the seventh grade — an educational milestone for many rural African American children during that era.

Marriage and Motherhood

By the mid-1930s, Nora married Marshall Anderson, Sr. (1902–1976). The 1940 Census shows the young couple living on Thomas Spur Road in Newton with their first child, Dora Lee. Marshall worked as a farmer, while Nora managed the household and family responsibilities.

Through their union, five children were born:

By 1950, the family resided on South 7th Street in Newton, where Marshall continued farming and Nora remained devoted to raising her children and maintaining the home.

Church Leadership and Community Service

Nora was far more than a homemaker — she was a visible and active church and civic worker in Newton County for decades.

She was a committed member of Sylvester United Methodist Church, where she frequently served in leadership roles. Newspaper accounts throughout the 1970s and 1980s document her:

  • Giving the welcome at Annual Women’s Day services
  • Serving on program committees and finance committees
  • Sponsoring youth participants in church festivals
  • Assisting with Harvest Festival Benefit Days
  • Participating in Children’s Spring Fiesta programs
  • Serving alongside pastors Rev. M.Q. Gilmore and Rev. Charles Wash

Her name appears repeatedly in church reports, not merely as a member, but as a worker and organizer.

Beyond the church walls, Nora participated in broader civic engagement. She was listed as a worker in the Newton United Givers Fund Drive, helping raise funds for community causes. She also participated in the 1959 Red Cross Colored Campaign, reflecting her involvement in organized community relief and service initiatives during segregation.

Her life reflects the model of the mid-twentieth-century Black church woman — quiet but powerful leadership exercised through service, fundraising, hospitality, and program organization.

Life Rooted in Newton County

Despite mid-century migration patterns that carried many Newton families to Detroit and other northern cities, Nora remained firmly anchored in Newton. Even as two of her daughters later resided in Michigan, her life’s work continued in the same community where she was born.

Census records occasionally reflect minor age discrepancies — common in historical records — but her geographic roots never shifted. Her life was centered in Beat 4 and the Lawrence/Newton community.

Death and Legacy

Nora Lee Belt Anderson passed away on November 12, 2009, at the age of 90.

She was laid to rest beside her husband, Marshall Anderson, Sr., at the Union Chapel Methodist graveyard in Lawrence, Mississippi — the same sacred ground that holds multiple generations of Anderson and Belt family members.

Her legacy lives through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, but also through the church programs she helped organize, the civic campaigns she supported, and the quiet, steady service she rendered for decades.

She represents a generation of women whose names appeared in church columns week after week — women who built community without ever seeking recognition.
