Life Story
Early Life in Newton County
Willie M. Belt was born around 1912 in Newton County, Mississippi, to Robert Belt and Virginia (Berry) Belt. She grew up in Beat 4 of Newton County as part of a large and active farming household.
The 1920 census records Willie as eight years old and attending school—evidence of her family’s commitment to education during the Jim Crow era. She was raised alongside siblings Julia, Bettie Mae, Lillie, Robert Jr., Annie,Nora, Bessie, and Larcenia, forming part of the well-documented Belt family network.
Marriage and Early Adulthood
Around 1928, at approximately 18 years of age, Willie married Otis Brown. By 1930, they were the parents of a daughter, Willie Grace.
The 1940 census shows the family living on Thomas Spur Road in Newton. During this time, Willie worked as a servant in a private home, earning $160 annually for 52 weeks of labor. Her steady employment reflects the economic realities faced by Black women in rural Mississippi during the early twentieth century.
The Great Migration to Detroit
Like many Southern Black families during the Great Migration, Willie and Otis relocated to Detroit, Michigan, by 1950.
They lived on Candly Street, and their home became a support center for extended family. The 1950 census shows their daughter Willie Grace and son-in-law Roosevelt Curley living with them, along with Willie’s sister Larcenia Kirkland. This shared household illustrates the cooperative family networks that helped ease the transition from the rural South to the industrial North.
Faith and Community
Willie was a woman of deep faith. In Mississippi, she was associated with Sylvester Methodist Church. After moving to Detroit, she became connected with Lomax A.M.E. Zion Temple.
Her obituary notes that funeral services were held February 9, 1991, at Lomax A.M.E. Zion Temple in Detroit, officiated by Rev. Parree Porter, Sr.
Her church affiliations demonstrate continuity of faith even as geography changed.
