Life Story
Clinton Chapman was born on November 14, 1946, in Newton County, Mississippi to Robert H. Chapman (1916-1986) and Mary Jane Moncrief (1922-2001). His grandparents on his paternal side were Benjamin Frank Chapman (1866-1941) and Hannah Coleman Chapman (1885-1962). On his maternal side, his grandparents were Matthew Moncrief (1895-?) and Larcenia Wheaton (1896-1970).
Clinton was one of fifty-three high school seniors who graduated from Newton Pilate High School in 1965. He married Ellen F. Chapman, and from this union, one daughter was born:
- Elaine L. Chapman
Clinton was serving in the Marines when, on February 21, 1968, he arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Mike Company, 2nd Battalion, 27th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
There was a battle on May 24, 1968, in which Clinton, aged 21, was killed by gunshot wounds from hostile forces small arms fire, at Le Bac (1) and Go Noi Island, 4 kilometers east of Liberty Bridge while participating in Operation Allen Brook.
Clinton is survived by his wife, Ellen, and their daughter, Elaine. Additionally, he is survived by his parents, Robert H. Chapman and Mary J. Chapman of Newton. His resting place is at the graveyard of St. John Missionary Baptist Church.
