Early Life and Family

Catherine Evans Kidd was born on March 26, 1944, the first daughter of Mattie Mae Norman Evans (1916–2002) and Eddie G. Wheaton (1916–1984). She was reared in a household where faith, family, and community responsibility were central values—principles that would guide her throughout her life.


Faith Journey and Church Service

Catherine’s spiritual foundation was formed early as a member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Newton, Mississippi. There, she worshiped alongside family and friends and developed a love for church life and fellowship.

As her faith matured, Catherine united with St. John Missionary Baptist Church, where her spiritual life deepened and her service expanded. At St. John, she became a trusted and active church worker, known for her dedication, reliability, and servant’s heart.

Church Leadership and Service Roles

  • Home Mission President, providing outreach and support to those in need
  • Treasurer for the Usher Board and Mass Choir, overseeing financial responsibilities
  • Youth Sunday School and Bible Class Instructor, guiding and nurturing younger generations in faith and values

Through these roles, Catherine helped sustain the spiritual and organizational life of St. John, leaving a lasting imprint on the church community.


Education and Working Life

Catherine was educated at Newton Vocational School, where she developed the work ethic and interpersonal skills that defined her professional life.

She was employed as a cashier at Big Star Grocery Store, where she became well known for her warmth and friendliness, building strong relationships with customers and coworkers alike.

Later, she began a long and meaningful career at Newton Regional Hospital, where she served as Dietary Manager for over 30 years. In this role, Catherine ensured that patients received nutritious meals prepared with care and dignity. Her leadership, compassion, and consistency made her a respected figure among hospital staff and throughout the community.

Family Life and Personal Legacy

Catherine was a hardworking, loving woman, devoted mother, and proud grandmother. She was known for bringing people together—whether through family gatherings, celebrations, or everyday acts of kindness. The joy she brought into a room was unmistakable, and she lived her life fully, generously, and without reservation.


Passing

Catherine Evans Kidd peacefully passed away on April 8, 2024, at Anderson Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family. She was preceded in death by:
